The flagellation of Jesus was one of the most challenging scenes in the whole movie, requiring many takes and retakes. Here Jesus (played by Jim Caviezel) gasps with pain as his flesh is gouged by the Roman whip. The soldiers look on bemused and somehow emotionally detached from the brutality that is being inflicted upon an innocent man. Much research went into ensuring scenes such as this were as historically accurate as possible. The whip was fitted with jagged pieces of metal designed to rip the flesh apart. According to the Scriptures, the flagellation was part of the awful price paid by Jesus for our salvation. "He was beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped and we were healed - The LORD laid on him the guilt and sins of us all" (Isaiah 53:5-6).
